Job description:

The Department of Justice and the Department of Health continue to collaborate on a project to manage the Tasmanian Suicide Register (TSR), a surveillance system for suicide in the state. The Research Officer is required to undertake the majority of the substantive work related to the functioning of the TSR. The role located in the Coronial Division will undertake high-level research and project work coordinating the Tasmanian Suicide Register and coding, extracting and analysing data using quantitative and qualitative research methods to provide information and identify trends relating to suicide deaths in Tasmania. In addition, this role will provide specialist advice for coroners and other stakeholders through regular reporting and data reviews to inform the evidence-base, to guide suicide prevention policy and highlight new areas for suicide prevention activity in Tasmania, including the intersectionality of suicide with deaths related to domestic violence and alcohol and other drugs.

Hours per fortnight

73.50 hours per fortnight - flexible options available.

Duties

  • Actively monitor all deaths reported to the coroner and update databases as required. Identify, request access to and return coronial files on suspected suicides investigated by the coroner.
  • Conduct an extensive review of the coronial file (comprising the coronial brief, medical records and forensic material) and accurately record complex information consistent with the Data Dictionary to code variables in the Tasmanian Suicide Register and the associated death surveillance systems.
  • Maintain, extract and analyse data of the Tasmanian Suicide Register, Overdose Death Register, and death surveillance databases and undertake regular quality audits and infrastructure reviews and provide reports as required using statistical software.
  • Liaise with NCIS (National Coronial Information System) regarding access applications, and apply specialist knowledge on research ethics and design to provide advice to coroners related to access for Tasmanian coronial data.
  • Establish, manage and maintain stakeholder relationships including attending and contributing to meetings held by the Tasmanian Suicide Prevention Committee and other related bodies.
  • Prepare reports to the Tasmanian Government on suicide in Tasmania in consultation with coroners and the Department of Health, including aggregate descriptive statistics for dissemination upon request to stakeholder groups.
  • Coordinate the receipt, review, and communication of external applications to Tasmanian suicide data on behalf of the Coronial Division Research Committee.
  • Supervise other coronial research staff as required.
  • Undertake other duties as directed.

Desirable Requirements

  • Extensive experience and/or a relevant tertiary qualification in public health, social sciences, data management, biomedical science, or other related fields.
  • Proficient use of the Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Microsoft Access and Excel and statistical software packages such as Stata or SPSS, R, or Python.
  • Understanding of mental health and suicide prevention policy environment, and the intersectionality between suicide and deaths related to domestic violence and alcohol and other drugs.
